In 1565, Andrés de Urdaneta, a navigator, cosmographer and humanist from Gipuzkoa, discovered one of the most important commercial routes in the world, linking Asia and the west of the Pacific with America. Gipuzkoa, and particularly his birth place, Ordizia, are commemorating the 500th anniversary of his birth, with a wide programme of events as a tribute to his persona.
