Safeguarding the memory
Throughout 2008, a wide programme of activities will be displaying the life and achievements of Andrés de Urdaneta, a figure still unknown to many. It includes a number of activities of scientific, cultural, and recreational nature, such as the re-issue of a book, the making of a documentary film, as well as a cycle of talks and conferences, a Summer Course at the University of the Basque Country, an exhibition, and an international congress focused on Urdaneta’s figure.
This seafarer from Ordizia will also be remembered across universities from the Philippines, Mexico and Peru, along with other parallel events. The President of the Philippines, Gloria Macapagal, who attended the opening of the commemoration ceremonies in Ordizia, has officially declared the year 2008 as the Urdaneta Year in her country.
