The ‘Wall Street’ of markets
The origin of this market goes back to the 11th-12th centuries, around the hermitage of San Bartolomé –a meeting point for Ordizia inhabitants and for the producers of the surroundings. Nowadays, the fair takes place in the town centre, in the Plaza Mayor (Main Square). Every Wednesday, the fair gathers buyers and sellers of agricultural and livestock products coming from the whole Goierri region, in a very lively and colourful atmosphere.
Besides ordinary markets, different special fairs take place throughout the year, such as the Agricultural Fair in September and its prestigious Sheep Cheese Competition. It gathers gourmets coming from all places in Spain and, as finishing touch, it organizes an auction of the winning cheese, which usually reaches prices over € 3,000. December holds an extraordinary fair that takes place on the first Wednesday after Christmas.
