Most
of the industrial structure in Gipuzkoa is covered by the manufacturing
sector.
Especially significant is the number of machine-tool
manufacturers in the province: the majority of Spanish companies
in this sector are located in Gipuzkoa.
The electronics industry has also risen dramatically in recent
years, parallel to the progress of telecommunications.
Here it is important to mention the existence of companies from
the more traditional sectors (such as iron and steel, foundry,
shipbuilding, paper, and furniture), as well as a large
auxiliary car industry, which supplies parts to the main
European manufacturers. |

Special
mention has to be made of the Mondragón
cooperative experience which has grown, in just over forty years,
from a small cooperative of five associated people into the largest
industrial group in the Basque Country and one of the main industrial
corporations in Europe, with branches on the five continents.
The success of this experience, which cleverly combines cooperative
philosophy with highly advanced entrepreneurial management, is still
a source of admiration in many countries. |
