Modernity has many faces. Throughout the 19th century, a new perception developed alongside economic, social and political  revolutions: the increased value of human life. Mankind began to live longer and better, and photography ensured that people’s true image – not the painted fiction of an artist – remained long after their deaths.  Embarkation of disabled carlists. Zumalakarregi Museum. Ormaiztegi. Gipuzkoa It is a period of strong optimism. Humans have increased their ability to kill, but they have also expanded their knowledge of healing and living. It has not been easy. Sometimes science is guided by intuition and prejudice and the diffusion of information goes against the interests of the authorities. Wars are the best testimony of the contradictory sentiments of this new-found sensitivity.
