Zumalakarregi and his era: born in 1788, he lived and died in a period filled with bloodshed and political upheavals -  result of the political and socio-economic conflicts arising from the hard-fought transition from a system based on the Ancien Régime to one rooted in Liberalism.

The First Carlist War, 1833-1839, saw Carlists and Liberals fighting over the pre-war situation, dynastic issues and the continuation of the Fueros, or regional charters. The Bergara Agreement put an end to the first war, but after the Second Carlist War (1872-1876) the Fueros were finally abolished.

The death of Zumalakarregi and the birth of a myth: the sudden death of the General at the height of the Carlist War in 1835 turned him into a figure of myth for both his comrades and enemies alike. The controversy that arose over his personality still rages today.  First floor
