Until now, the work of the Social Services Department in Gipuzkoa as far as the welfare of senior citizens is concerned has been focused on activities aimed at taking care of elderly people who were getting no support from their families or where the support they were getting was not enough to cover their needs.
Moreover, we can see that a large number of elderly dependents (with various degrees of physical, psychic or sensory disability) live together with their families, who perform basic nursing tasks and maintain these people in their natural surroundings.This care and attention mean that these families are overburdened, which leads them to neglect to a certain extent the activities that they themselves usually carry out, and in some cases, creates situations that affect the stability of the family.
GIZARTEKINTZA- The Social Services Department, while recognizing the importance of the social work that these families are doing, feel that it is necessary to boost the means of support for these families, by promoting a series of measures that will allow a comprehensive support programme, combining technical, economic and material activities, as well as initiatives by volunteers.These activities appear in a support programme called "SENDIAN" for families with elderly handicapped people; all of them share the common objective of providing support measures for families that live together with an elderly handicapped person.
